Every DWV system has to hold a water or air test before it is covered, and in most jurisdictions the inspector has to witness it. Failing at that point means opening finished work, which is why the plug matters more than its price suggests.
Mechanical plugs expand against the pipe wall by tightening a wing nut, and they hold static head. Pneumatic test balls inflate and are used where the plug must pass through a smaller opening than it seals. Test wedges fit the cleanout or the fitting hub and come with or without a bleed valve — the valve version lets you release the column of water in a controlled way instead of taking it in the face.
Size to the pipe, not to the fitting. Sizes here run 1-1/2" through 6".
