Shower and tub diverter valves, in-wall rough-in bodies and diverter trims, mostly 1/2" inlet.

A diverter sends water from one outlet to another — tub spout to showerhead, or between multiple shower outlets. A transfer valve is the related but different device: it can feed two outlets at once, which is what a body-spray and rain-head combination needs. Choosing a diverter where a transfer valve was intended means only one outlet ever runs.

Count outlets before ordering. Three-way and six-way diverters exist, and the number is fixed by the valve body in the wall, not by the trim on the face of it. Adding an outlet later means opening the wall.

Rough-in body and finish trim are ordered separately on most manufacturers' systems, which is what lets the valve go in during construction and the finish be chosen at the end. They must be from the same family — trim is not cross-compatible between brands or between generations.

Brands include Moen (M-CORE transfer valves and Posi-Temp with diverter), Grohe, hansgrohe, Delta, Brizo, American Standard, Pfister, TOTO and DXV, with 2-way, 3-way and 3-or-6-function diverter and transfer valve roughs.

The mixing valve that feeds the diverter is in shower and tub-shower valves; the finish trim is in shower trim sets and thermostatic valve trims.

Frequently asked questions

What does a shower diverter valve do?

A shower diverter valve sends water from the mixing valve to one outlet or another, such as the showerhead, a hand shower or a tub spout. The mixing valve sets the temperature; the diverter only chooses where the water goes.

What is a 3-way diverter valve?

A 3-way diverter has three outlet positions, so it can switch between three outlets, for example a showerhead, a hand shower and body sprays. Some 3-way diverters also have shared positions that run two outlets at once; check the product page.

Can I use a different brand of trim on my diverter valve?

No. The trim has to be made for the rough-in valve in the wall, so match the brand and model of the valve body. The rough-in and the trim are sold separately.

Diverter valve vs transfer valve: what is the difference?

A diverter valve sends all the water to one outlet at a time, such as the tub spout or the showerhead. A transfer valve can also run two outlets together, for example a rain head and body sprays. If you want two outlets on at the same time, choose a transfer valve or a diverter with shared positions.

2-way or 3-way diverter: which do I need?

Count the outlets. A 2-way diverter switches between two outlets, such as a showerhead and a hand shower. A 3-way diverter handles three, such as a showerhead, a hand shower and body sprays. The number is set by the rough-in body in the wall, so plan every outlet before the wall is closed.

How do I pick the right diverter valve?

Start with the brand and family of your mixing valve and trim, because trim only fits its own rough-in. Then match the number of outlets, the inlet connection (sweat, IPS or PEX) and the inlet size, which is 1/2" on most models here. The matching finish pieces are in diverter valve trims.
