The rough-in is what makes or breaks a laundry, and it gets set long before the machine arrives. The outlet box has to land where the washer actually sits, the drain standpipe has to be tall enough that the machine cannot siphon itself and short enough that it drains — both limits are in the code and the local amendment is the one that counts — and the supply has to have somewhere for the shock to go when the solenoid slams. Getting any of the three wrong shows up as a puddle or a bang months later, behind a finished wall.

Washing machine outlet boxes are the first decision, and they are matched to the pipe on the job — copper sweat or MIP, F1807 crimp PEX, F1960 cold-expansion PEX, or push-connect. Nearly all of them carry a water hammer arrestor built in. Where the wall is a rated assembly, the box has to be fire-rated too.

Utility sinks and laundry tubs are sized by what gets washed in them rather than by the room — an 18" single bowl beside the washer, a 40" double bowl for a shop — and the choice between a floor model on steel legs and a wall-hung tub decides whether the wall needs blocking.

Faucets split two ways. A standard laundry faucet is a 4-inch centerset with a hose-thread spout so a washer or garden hose threads straight on. A wall-mount service faucet sets the spout high enough to fill a bucket and carries a vacuum breaker and a wall brace, which is what a utility or janitor sink needs.

Floor sinks handle the indirect waste — a receptor set flush in the slab that takes a drain line discharging with an air gap rather than a direct connection, which is where commercial laundry and mechanical rooms end up.
