The three humidifier types differ in how they get water into the air. Bypass units use furnace airflow across an evaporator pad and need a bypass duct. Fan-powered units carry their own blower and need no bypass, so they suit tight installations. Steam units boil water and add moisture independently of the furnace running — the only type that works on a system that is not calling for heat.
The evaporator pad is a consumable. It scales up with mineral deposits and stops absorbing, which shows up as a humidifier that runs but delivers nothing; annual replacement is normal maintenance, not repair.
Humidistat placement decides whether the system behaves. Mounted in the return duct it reads mixed air; mounted on a wall it reads the living space, which is what the occupant actually experiences.
