Choosing a material

Three constraints usually decide it, in this order:

  • Temperature. PVC stops at 140°F and holds only 22% of its rating there — it is not a hot water material. CPVC reaches 200°F, PEX and copper handle domestic hot water comfortably.
  • Code. Type M copper is prohibited underground in many jurisdictions. DWV and sewer pipe are not interchangeable. Gas press fittings need their own listing. What is legal to buy is not always legal to install.
  • Joining. Whether the building allows a flame decides more retrofit jobs than material cost does. Press, push and crimp all avoid hot work permits.
