One-piece or four-piece is the first decision, and it is about the doorway, not the shower. A one-piece unit (SS and SST models) arrives as a single molded shell — stronger, no seams to seal, but it will not pass through a finished door frame. It goes in during new construction or a gut remodel, before the walls close. A four-piece unit (KDS) ships as a base plus three wall panels that assemble in the alcove, so it fits through a standard door and is the one for a remodel in a finished house.
AFR means Above-the-Floor Rough. Those models sit on a taller base so the drain can be plumbed above the slab instead of below it. On a concrete floor or a basement bathroom, that is the difference between a day of work and breaking out the floor to move a drain line.
Drain hand is fixed at the factory: center, left-hand or right-hand, matched to where the existing waste line sits. Seat position is the same kind of choice — no seat, left seat, right seat or two seats — and it cannot be changed after the fact, so it has to match the plan before ordering.
