A drop-in lav sits on the vanity top with its rim covering the cut edge, which is what makes it the basin for a laminate or cultured-marble top where an undermount would leave the core open to water. It is also the simpler swap: the basin lifts out without touching the counter. The same sink is sold as self-rimming or top-mount depending on the catalogue.
The faucet drilling is in the basin and cannot be changed. Single hole for a one-piece faucet; 4-inch centerset where handles and spout share one base; 8-inch widespread where the three pieces mount separately on the deck. All three are stocked, and the Gerber Maxwell and Wicker Park each come in all three — so the basin can be matched to a faucet that has already been chosen rather than the other way round.
Most of these basins carry an overflow and take a pop-up with overflow ports. The American Standard Aqualyn is stocked both ways: 0476028 with the overflow and 0476928 without. The drain has to match the basin — a solid grid drain fitted to a basin with an overflow seals the channel and the overflow stops doing anything.
