PVC SCH 40 Fittings

PVC Schedule 40 pressure fittings, sizes 1/2" through 8", in socket x socket, spigot x socket, all-socket, socket x FPT and spigot x FPT.

Schedule 40 shares an outside diameter with Schedule 80 but has a thinner wall, a larger bore and a lower pressure rating. Pressure rating also falls with diameter — a 1/2" SCH 40 fitting is rated far higher than a 4" one, which surprises people sizing an irrigation main by material alone rather than by the published rating for that size.

Temperature matters more than pressure in most failures. PVC loses roughly half its rated strength by 110°F and is not approved for hot water at all; CPVC is the material for that.

A spigot end is sized to enter a socket, so a spigot x socket bushing reduces without adding a coupling. Joints are primed and solvent cemented, both surfaces, quarter-turned and left to cure.
