Burnham Boilers

Burnham residential boilers made by US Boiler Company. The lineup includes Series 2e cast iron chimney-vented gas boilers, X-PV cast iron power-vented boilers, Alta water-tube condensing boilers and the Alta combi, Aspen fire-tube condensing boilers, and the MPO-IQ oil-fired cast iron boiler.

The first choice is venting. A chimney-vented Series 2e suits a straight replacement where a lined chimney is already in place. The X-PV vents through the side wall with a power venter, which helps when the chimney is gone or unsafe. Alta and Aspen units are sealed-combustion condensing boilers vented in PVC, CPVC or polypropylene, and they need a condensate drain and, in most areas, a neutralizer.

Size the boiler from a heat-loss calculation, not from the nameplate of the unit coming out. Older boilers were often oversized, and a condensing boiler only reaches its rated efficiency when return water is cool enough to condense, so check the emitters and the design water temperature.

Replacement components such as igniters, flame sensors, gas valves, blowers and sensors are in US Boiler parts. For the near-boiler piping, see circulator pumps and venting, or compare other brands in all boilers.
