Whole-house shut-off valves go on the main downstream of the service shutoff and close the entire supply when a sensor trips. The Resideo L5 is an actuator on a lead-free ball valve, shipped with a power adapter, a mounting clip and a 5 ft sensing cable, in 1/2", 3/4", 1" and 1-1/4" NPT. Flo by Moen puts detection and shut-off in one body, in 3/4", 1" and 1-1/4". Size the valve to the line you are cutting into, not to a fixture branch: a 1" main needs a 1" valve or the whole house loses pressure through the device.
Appliance shut-off kits cover the known failure points for a fraction of the price of a whole-house valve. FloodStop builds one kit per appliance: 3/4" NPT MIP x FIP for a water heater, two 3/4" 90-degree valves for a washing machine, 1/4" compression for an ice maker and 3/8" compression for a toilet or dishwasher. Taco's LeakBreaker is water-heater specific, a control unit with valve, actuator and sensor that shuts the supply to the heater, with a two-color LED and an audible alarm. It is re-settable and testable after a trip, and the eLink version reports status over WiFi.
Point sensors raise the alarm but close nothing. The Resideo L1 detects water on its own base or anywhere along its 5 ft sensing cable, runs on WiFi with no hub, sounds a 100 dB alarm and sends an app notification. It also reads temperature and humidity, so it warns before a pipe freezes rather than after it bursts. Battery life runs up to three years, the unit is reusable once wiped dry, and cables daisy-chain to cover up to 500 feet from a single detector.
