Line Voltage Thermostats

Line-voltage thermostats switch electric baseboard, convector and floor heating directly at 120 or 240 V, with no transformer or relay in between.

Check the thermostat's current rating against the heater load (many models carry 16.7 A). Double-pole models disconnect both legs of a 240 V circuit and give a true off position; single-pole models break one leg only.

For electric floor heating, use a floor-heating thermostat with a floor sensor. GA models include a 5 mA GFCI, which floor heating installations typically require. Mechanical baseboard thermostats (T498) and programmable electronic models (TL8130, TL8230, TH106, TH115) are both stocked.

For low-voltage (24V) systems, see non-programmable and programmable thermostats. Covers, range stops and floor sensors are in thermostat accessories, and wireless line voltage modules are in RedLINK accessories.

Frequently asked questions

What is a line voltage thermostat?

It switches a 120V or 240V electric heater directly, with no transformer or relay. It is used for electric baseboard, convectors, fan-forced wall heaters and radiant floor heat, and it is not interchangeable with a 24V thermostat.

Single-pole or double-pole?

A double-pole thermostat breaks both legs of a 240V circuit and has a true off position. A single-pole model breaks one leg only, so the heater stays connected to power even when it is off.

How do I size a baseboard heater thermostat?

Add up the wattage of the heaters on the circuit and check it against the thermostat's current rating at your voltage. Many models are rated 16.7 A, which is about 4,000 W at 240V.

Is there a smart or wireless option for electric baseboard heat?

Yes. The Honeywell Home TLM1110R1000 and Aube ATM100-SPK are RedLINK wireless line voltage equipment interface modules for electric baseboard, convectors and fan-forced heaters at 100-240V. They are listed in RedLINK accessories. Pair them with a compatible RedLINK thermostat.
