How to choose a 50 gallon water heater

Start with the fuel the house already has. Like for like avoids a new gas line or 240 V circuit.

On gas, match the venting. Atmospheric models use an existing B-vent or chimney. Powered damper models close the flue when idle. Power vent and power direct vent models use a blower and plastic pipe through a side wall. Higher input recovers faster.

On electric, check height and circuit. Residential models run on 240 V with 4.5 or 5.5 kW elements, in medium and tall heights. A heat pump model uses far less electricity but needs air space and a condensate drain.

Compare the first-hour rating on the spec sheet with your busiest hour of use. If 50 gallons is more than you need, see Rheem 40 gallon water heaters. Related: heat pump water heaters · tankless water heaters · water heater connectors · water heater pans · how to drain and flush a water heater
