Black Iron Pipe and Fittings: Sizes, Threads and Pressure Ratings
Thread engagement, pressure limits and the standards that govern black iron threaded systems, with the sizes and configurations we actually stock. 382 items across fittings, nipples and pipe.
Black iron and galvanized are the same steel
The only difference is the zinc coating. Both are carbon steel with the same wall thickness, the same NPT threads and the same fitting dimensions. A black elbow and a galvanized elbow of the same size are interchangeable on the bench.
The reason the trade separates them is what the zinc does over time. In a fuel gas line, zinc can shed from the inside of the pipe and the flakes travel downstream into regulators, gas valves and burner orifices. The commentary to NFPA 54 raises exactly this. That is why black is the default on interior gas, and why galvanized is the default on potable water, where bare steel would rust instead.
Which standard governs which part
A black iron assembly is covered by four or five separate standards, not one. The distinction that matters most in ordering is that unions are not B16.3 parts and are not rated like the fittings around them.

Class 150 pressure ratings
Class 150 is a dimensional class, not a pressure in psi. The actual ratings are higher than the class number for cold service and equal to it for steam.

The union line is the one that catches people. A Class 150 union installed in a run of Class 150 fittings drops the working pressure of that run from 300 psi to 150 psi, because a system is rated at its weakest component. On a line that needs the full 300, the union has to come from the Class 250 or Class 300 range.
Floor flanges are a mounting fitting. The 1/2" flange BLIF-050-FFLG is dimensioned to thread onto pipe and bolt to a surface, and is not intended to close a pressurized line. Check the manufacturer listing before putting one in a pressure application.
NPT threads and how far they go in
NPT is a tapered thread. The seal comes from the flanks of the thread deforming against each other as the taper tightens, not from the sealant. Pipe dope and PTFE tape are lubricants that let you reach the right engagement without galling; they are not what holds the pressure. This is why over-doping a joint that is only two turns in still leaks.
L1 is the hand-tight engagement: how far the joint goes together with no wrench, on perfectly formed threads. Wrench makeup then adds roughly two to three more turns. A thread gauge is accepted within plus or minus one turn of flush, which is the tolerance the whole system is built around.

Two things fall out of that table. The thread pitch changes at 1/2", at 1" and again at 2-1/2", so a die set that covers 1/8" through 2" needs three pitches. And engagement grows much more slowly than size: a 4" joint goes hand tight in 0.844", barely five times the 1/8" figure for a pipe eleven times the diameter.

Of the 203 fittings, 109 are reducing configurations rather than straight sizes. Reducing bushings are the cheapest way to step down a run: BLIF-025.018-BSH takes a 1/4" female opening down to 1/8" in one part, where a reducing coupling plus two nipples would take three.
End connection codes
The same joint gets written four ways across manufacturer catalogs. These are the codes you will see on our listings and what each one describes.

Street fittings are the ones worth knowing by name. BLIF-025-ST90 is a 1/4" 90 with one male and one female end, so it threads straight into another fitting and saves the close nipple that a double-female elbow would need. Fewer joints is fewer leak paths. We stock 16 street elbows across the 90 and 45 degree patterns.

Nipples: close, short and cut
A nipple is a length of pipe threaded on both ends, made to ASTM A733. It is not a malleable casting, which is why nipples and fittings carry different standards even though they sit next to each other in the same run.
A close nipple is threaded end to end with no bare shoulder in the middle. BLPN-050-CLS is the shortest possible connection between two 1/2" fittings. It is also the weakest point in the run and cannot be gripped with a pipe wrench without crushing the threads. Use an internal nipple wrench, and where the geometry allows it, take a short nipple with a shoulder instead. At the other end of the range, BLPN-050-72 is a 72" cut length in the same 1/2" size.

Length tolerance on a threaded nipple is plus or minus one tenth of an inch up to 12 inches, and plus or minus an eighth above that. On a run assembled from six nipples that stacks up, which is why a long run gets one cut piece rather than a chain of catalog lengths.
Pipe dimensions
Nominal pipe size is a label, not a measurement. The outside diameter is fixed for a given size and the schedule sets the wall, so the bore changes and the OD does not. That is what lets a Schedule 40 and a Schedule 80 pipe of the same nominal size take the same fitting.

Note that 1/8" pipe has a 0.405" outside diameter and a 0.269" bore. Neither number is one eighth of an inch. The nominal figure stopped matching the physical pipe more than a century ago and was never renumbered.
