A pressure switch is what starts and stops a well pump: the 40/60 closes the pump circuit when system pressure falls to 40 PSI and opens it again at 60 PSI. The pair of numbers has to match the pressure tank's pre-charge, which is normally set 2 PSI below the cut-in.
