Hot water storage tanks for indirect, solar and commercial systems, in capacities from 60 gallons through over 250 gallons.

A storage tank is not a water heater. It has no burner and no element — heat comes from an external source through a coil or a circulated loop, which is what makes it the right vessel behind a boiler, a heat pump, a solar array or a high-recovery commercial heater. Separating storage from heating lets a small, efficient heat source cover a large draw.

Size to peak demand, not to daily volume. A building that uses 300 gallons a day spread evenly needs far less storage than one that uses 150 gallons in a twenty-minute morning peak.

Check the physical envelope before ordering: diameters here run 24" to 36" and heights 58" to 80", and a tank that clears the doorway may still not clear the ceiling once it is upright. Connections are 1-1/2" through 3" MIP or NPT.

Brands include Rheem, Sanco and Heat-Flo.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a storage tank and an indirect water heater?

An indirect water heater has a heat exchanger coil inside the tank, heated by boiler water. A plain storage tank has no coil: water is heated outside the tank, by a boiler, heat pump, solar loop or commercial heater, and circulated through it.

What does ASME construction mean?

An ASME tank is built and stamped to the ASME pressure vessel code. Many jurisdictions require ASME tanks above certain sizes or heat inputs, so check the local code for commercial and large residential systems.

Can a storage tank be added to a tankless or boiler system?

Yes. A storage tank lets a small heat source cover a large peak draw. It needs a circulator and controls to move water between the heat source and the tank, sized to the system.
