Replacement Toilet Tanks

Seventy-eight toilet tanks sold on their own, without a bowl, from American Standard (34), TOTO (20), Gerber (18), Duravit (4) and DXV (2). Prices run from $60 to $795. If you need the other half, the toilet bowls are on their own page.

A toilet tank is not a universal part

This is the one thing worth getting right before anything else. A two-piece toilet is engineered as a matched pair: the tank's outlet, its bolt pattern, its flush valve height and its water volume are all designed around one specific bowl. A replacement toilet tank from the correct model family will bolt down and flush properly. One that merely looks similar will either not seat on the bolt holes, or will seat and then flush badly forever. Find the model number cast inside your existing tank - usually on the back wall above the water line, or under the lid - and match it.

Rough-in: 10, 12 or 14 inches

Rough-in is the distance from the finished wall to the centre of the closet flange bolts. Twelve inches is the modern standard and covers 36 of the tanks here; 6 are built for a 10-inch rough-in, common in houses built before the 1960s and in some compact bathrooms, and one is 14-inch. The Duravit DuraSystem WD1022000091 is different again - an in-wall carrier tank that hides inside a 2x4 or 2x6 stud bay.

Forty-four of these carry the rough-in in the product title. For the other 34 - most of the TOTO range among them - check the specification block further down the product page, where it often appears. Where it is not listed at all, work from the bowl's model number rather than from a tape measure, because the manufacturer pairs the tank to a named bowl rather than to a dimension.

Flush volume has to match the bowl

Forty-eight of these are 1.28 gpf, the current federal maximum for a new toilet; 15 are 1.6 gpf for older bowls designed around that volume; a handful are 1.0 and 1.1 gpf high-efficiency. Putting a 1.28 gpf tank on a bowl engineered for 1.6 gpf does not save water - it starves a trapway sized for more, and you get double flushes, which uses more. Match what the bowl was built for.

Dual flush and pressure assist

Eight tanks are dual flush: a full flush for solids and a reduced one for liquids, either through a split trip lever or a top push button. The TOTO Aquia IV family and Duravit's DuraStyle and ME by Starck use the button.

Four American Standard tanks are pressure assist, and these are a different machine entirely. Inside the china tank sits a sealed plastic vessel. Incoming line pressure compresses air above the water, and the flush releases that stored pressure rather than relying on gravity and head height. The result is a forceful, short, loud flush that clears a bowl in one go - which is why they are standard in commercial restrooms. None of the internal parts interchange with a gravity tank, and they need a minimum of about 20 psi of static line pressure to work.

Trip lever hand and WASHLET+ routing

Thirteen of these have a right-hand trip lever and five are explicitly left-hand; the rest are standard left. It sounds trivial until the toilet sits in a corner or beside a vanity and the handle is against the wall. Separately, twelve TOTO tanks are WASHLET+ compatible, which means the tank is built to route the supply line to a bidet seat through a concealed connection rather than a visible tee - a detail that only matters if you are installing a WASHLET, and matters a lot if you are.

Lined tanks and colours

American Standard's "Lined" tanks (4188A054, 4188A154 and 4425A154) carry a foam liner bonded to the inside of the china. In a humid bathroom, cold supply water chills the tank wall below the dew point and it sweats - the puddle on the floor that looks like a leak but is not. The liner stops it. Ten tanks here come in something other than plain white: Bone, Linen, Sedona Beige, Colonial White, Canvas White and Ebony.

What else the job needs

A tank swap is rarely just the tank. You will want the tank-to-bowl gasket and bolt set, and a new flush valve and fill valve if the old ones are anything but new - see toilet repair parts. If the toilet is coming off the floor, add a wax ring and closet bolts. And while the water is off, it is the right moment to replace the angle stop and the toilet supply line, which together cost less than the trip back.
