Most shower problems are fixed at the cartridge, not the valve body. A drip from the showerhead, water that will not get hot, or a handle that turns too far all point to a worn cartridge or a failed pressure-balance spool. Replacing the cartridge is a repair from the front of the wall: the valve stays in place and no tile has to come out.
Cartridges are brand- and series-specific. A Moen Posi-Temp cartridge, a Delta MultiChoice 13/14 or 17 Series cartridge and an American Standard pressure-balance cartridge are not interchangeable, so identify the valve before ordering: the part number on the old cartridge, the trim model or the manufacturer's parts diagram will tell you which one fits. Renovation kits and cover plates let you update the trim over an existing valve and hide the old wall opening.

How do I know which shower cartridge I need?
Start with the brand of the valve, then the series. The part number is often stamped on the old cartridge, and the trim model number leads to the manufacturer's parts diagram. Pulling the old cartridge and comparing it side by side is the most reliable check.
Can I replace a cartridge without changing the valve?
Yes. The cartridge comes out from the front once the handle and trim are removed, so the valve body stays in the wall. Shut off the water to the shower first, either at the valve's built-in stops or at the main.
What is a renovation kit?
A renovation kit or cover plate is a larger trim plate that covers the opening left by an older or bigger valve trim, so new trim can be installed without repairing tile around the valve.
