13 mop and service sink items — six floor-mount basins and seven accessories — from Fiat Products, Florestone, E.L. Mustee and American Standard, in molded stone, molded fiberglass and enamelled cast iron. Basins run 24" x 24" and 36" x 24", 10" deep where the manufacturer publishes the dimension.
A mop sink is not a deep laundry tub under another name. It sits on the floor with the rim only a few inches up, so a loaded bucket is dragged over the edge rather than lifted to waist height — which is the whole point of the fixture and the reason a janitor closet gets one instead of a utility sink on legs. The body is built to take a steel bucket rim without chipping, and the corners are coved so they can actually be cleaned.
The drain is 3 inch, not the 1-1/2 inch tailpiece a laundry tub uses. That is the dimension that catches people out, because it lands on the DWV side of the job rather than the fixture side: a mop basin dropped into a rough-in sized for a laundry tub does not connect. Fiat’s quick-drain gasket handles the 3" no-hub connection, and the 3" x 2" quick-drain connect adapts down where the existing stub is 2".
Material sets the service life. Molded stone — the Fiat mop basin and Mustee’s DURASTONE — is the heavy, hard option and the usual specification for a commercial janitor closet. Mustee also builds in molded fiberglass, which is lighter to set. American Standard’s Florwell is enamelled cast iron: the longest-lasting of the three and by far the heaviest to move into place. None of them are fixtures to shim — they want a level, fully supported floor.
The accessories are what keep the wall alive, and on a commercial job they are not optional. Stainless and vinyl bumper guards take the bucket strikes at the rim. Stainless wall guards protect the finish behind and beside the faucet, where mop handles and spray do the damage. A hose and hose bracket keeps the fill hose off a wet floor. The wall behind an unguarded mop sink is the first thing on the job to fail.
