An oscillating tool vibrates the blade through a few degrees of arc instead of spinning it, which is what lets it plunge-cut into a wall without a pilot hole and cut flush against a surface. It is the tool for undercutting door jambs, cutting out grout, trimming pipe in a finished wall and scraping adhesive.
