Sillcocks

A sillcock is the outdoor wall faucet that feeds a garden hose. What separates it from a plain hose bibb is length: the valve seat sits at the far end of a long tube that reaches back through the wall into heated space, so the water shuts off inside the insulation envelope and the exposed section drains itself. That is why these are also sold as frost-free or freeze-proof wall hydrants.

Specify by the wall thickness you need to cross — the tube length is nominal from the mounting flange, commonly 4" through 14" — and by the inlet, which is typically 1/2" or 3/4" in sweat, FIP or PEX. A frost-free sillcock only works if it is pitched down toward the outside and the hose is disconnected in winter; a hose left attached traps water against the seat and defeats the drain.
