Non-Programmable Thermostats

Non-programmable thermostats for forced air and hydronic heating — a fixed setpoint you turn, with no schedule to configure.

They exist because a schedule is a liability in some installations, not a feature. A rental unit, a commercial space with irregular hours, a garage, a workshop or a tenant who will fight the programming all work better with a thermostat that holds one temperature until someone changes it. They also have far fewer service calls, because there is nothing to reprogram after a power outage and no battery to die.

Match the stage count to the equipment: a single-stage furnace, a two-stage furnace and a heat pump with auxiliary heat all need different terminal configurations, and a thermostat with too few stages will run the equipment but never use its second stage. Heat pumps specifically need a thermostat that supports reversing valve and emergency heat.

These are low-voltage (24V) controls. Electric baseboard and radiant panels need line-voltage thermostats instead, which switch 120V or 240V directly — the two are not interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions

What is a non-programmable thermostat?

It holds one setpoint until someone changes it, with no schedule to configure. That makes it a good fit for rentals, commercial spaces with irregular hours, garages and workshops.

Will a non-programmable thermostat work with my heat pump?

Only if the model is rated for heat pumps. Check that it supports the reversing valve (O/B) and auxiliary or emergency heat, and that its heat and cool stages match the equipment.

Do these thermostats need batteries or a C-wire?

Many Honeywell Home PRO and FocusPRO models can run on AA batteries or on 24V from a common (C) wire. Check the power options on the product page before installing.

What is the difference between a heat-only and a heat/cool thermostat?

A heat-only thermostat controls a furnace, boiler or other heating appliance and has no cooling terminal. A heat/cool thermostat also switches an air conditioner or heat pump. Honeywell heat-only models here include the T87K1007/U, the T822K1000/U and the PRO 1000 TH1100DV1000/U. For a system with central air, choose a heat/cool model such as the PRO 3000 TH3110D1008/U or the FocusPRO 5000 TH5110D1022/U.

Battery or C-wire: which do I need?

Mechanical models such as the T87 and T822 need neither batteries nor a C-wire. Digital models need power for the display: battery-powered models run on AA batteries, so they work where there is no common (C) wire, while a C-wire supplies 24V continuously, so there are no batteries to replace. If the old thermostat has no C-wire, choose a model that can run on batteries.
