Zoning a hydronic system with valves instead of separate circulators is cheaper and simpler, but it changes the hydraulics: as zones close, flow through the remaining ones rises and the pump rides up its curve. That is why a valve-zoned system usually wants a pressure-bypass or a variable-speed circulator, and why a fixed-speed pump on a multi-zone valve system is often the source of velocity noise.
Most residential zone valves fail at the powerhead, not the valve body. Replacement heads are stocked separately and swap without draining the system, which is the cheap fix when a zone stops responding but the valve still moves by hand.
Connections are sweat, press, flare and FNPT in 1/2" through 1".
